On the Road Again

We had a lot of seat time today as we went from Munising, MI to Ely, MN.  9 hours to be exact.  We stopped when we needed to stretch, one break was Agate Falls in the upper peninsula.  It was a nice little hike and got us out of the car for a few minutes.
As we were driving through Ashland, Wisconsin we got to experience reddish lake water, Kota called it Gatorade water.  Anyhow, last week there was a giant rain storm that flood the areas around Superior.  It brought a lot of clay into the lake and turned it a reddish color.
In Duluth, MN it actually washed out some of the roads and gave us our first detour on the way up to Ely.
About a 1/2 hour from Ely we bump into our second detour of the day.  So much for the road they completely took it out and had us drive on this for miles, and miles, and miles....Wouldn't you know we only had a 1/4 tank of gas in the middle of no where too.
I'm not sure why we had to take this dirt road, when we could have driven on the other dirt road, but we made it.  Tomorrow we visit the college that Dakota would like to attend.  The town of Ely is great.  I'll take more pics tomorrow when we actually act like tourists.  I'm afraid it is so nice up here, I might not get my son to leave the state.  So the question of the night?  Do you pay for room and board at the college or buy a small home (folks were talking $40,000s for a decent little place) and gain equity and use it as a business venture?  Hmm...lots to think about in the next few months.

  1. Gorgeous falls! And if Kota is up to all of the home maintenance, it might be worth considering. If not, that out of town real estate could become a real pain.

  2. Such a beautiful area and I love the red water too. The house idea isn't too off base really. I think if you can rent it out to students while Kota is living in it too, you could pay the mortgage that way. My Uncle did that when his kids were in school. But far away homes are hard to upkeep unless you have someone to help you..plus students are not always the best tenants. Have fun this week!

  3. We've had several friends purchase small homes or even condos to house their kids while in college. I guess it depends on the land value wherever they go. Seems like a pretty good idea to me, though, because good student housing is always filled easily around colleges, so it could be a good investment!
